This novel has regenerated a lot of attention since the A Discovery of Witches BBC America series hit the airwaves. This reviewer can’t comment on the merits of the TV series but can talk about the 11 year old book. Will it stand the test of time?

Find this book and many others at you Augusta-Richmond County Public Libraries. Visit arcpls.org or call your local branch library for assistance.

Paranormal romance has become a very popular genre and A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness may stand as one of the classics in the category. Not only is it a tale of star-crossed yet forbidden love, the richness of the adventure and the historical snippets can keep you enthralled as well.

Diana Bishop has been a reluctant witch all her life. She choses to live as a human, forging an identity as a well-respected historian and distancing herself from her magical heritage. After examining a magical book as part of her research, Diana draws the attention of magical creatures, among them the vampire Matthew Clairmont who is also a geneticist with an interest in other-worldly DNA.

Thanks to Matthew’s DNA testing, they learn that Diana is not just a witch but potentially the most powerful witch who has ever lived. This, combined with other creatures’ lust for the ancient manuscript, has turned Diana into a hunted individual who starts to uncover threats to her life, not the least, her new magical powers which she has no idea how to control.

This book gives us multiple suspenseful moments. Will Matthew and Diana go from enemies to lovers? Will she avoid the creatures who wish to hunt her down? Most importantly, having grown interested in the characters, will there be further books to wrap up the story?

Thankfully, the answer is yes. You can find all three novels as e-books and audiobooks from the Overdrive service and A Discovery of Witches as a print novel and audiobook on the shelves of the Augusta Richmond County Library. There is even a DVD of the first part of the TV series so you can explore A Discovery of Witches as a multimedia experience. For more information, contact your library branch or visit us at arcpls.org for the start of an absorbing adventure.

Well, a girl has to roll with the flow. She’s okay with the talking dog and the fairy cat. What is shocking is her mother’s sudden interest in Carl the town sheriff, her introverted friend Evie coming out of her shell, and her brother Shep whose perfect marriage has fallen apart.

All the while, Addy’s falling hard for the dominating interdimensional hunk while fighting off ghouls and demons. Will hunky Brand stay with our feisty heroine or will he go back to his home world never to be seen again?

This book is a lighthearted romp, but beware, it’s a little bit racy which is only to be expected from the strong, silent, interdimensional types.

Ellie and the Harpmaker by Hazel Prior tells the story of Ellie and Dan. Told in the first person, the chapters alternate between the viewpoints of Ellie and Dan as they come to find they have much in common in their outlook on life.

Ellie, having dubbed herself the “Exmoor Housewife,” is going through a quiet crisis, mourning the death of her father. Ellie agrees with one of his last observations–that she is just drifting through her own life and needs to find a passion to fill it. To give herself some direction, she makes a list of things she wants to do before 40 and playing the harp is on the list.

She is totally surprised to discover Dan, a harp maker, who lives close to paths she loves to walk. Dan’s harps are astounding works of art. Dan is more concerned with matching his harps to the people who want them than being paid, and on a whim, he gives Ellie a cherrywood harp for her own.

Unable to keep the harp because of her husband’s objections, Ellie returns it. He who informs her that if she does not play this harp, it will live out its life played by no one. As Ellie returns each day to play her harp, a firm friendship develops between her and Dan as they find they share a love of the Exmoor countryside and its ever-changing beauty.

While Ellie is changing her life with the harp, unexpected news changes Dan’s own world. He finds he is the father of his former girlfriend’s child and has to persevere in being included in his son’s life.

The secret friendship between the two harp aficionados is discovered by Ellie’s husband Clive, who reacts both petulantly and violently by arranging to burn down Dan’s harp barn. How will Dan rebuild his life since everything has been destroyed, including his home, his tools and, most importantly, the thirty odd harps that perished in the blaze? How will Ellie go forward with her life now that she has left Clive, and well-meaning friends tell her that Dan no longer wishes to know her? These dilemmas are come to a sweet and satisfying conclusion. If you want to read this charming story, be sure to check it out via the Augusta-Richmond County Libraries’ LIBBY app today.

I am jealous of Meg. So jealous of Meg, I could spit. Kate Clayborn’s heroine in Love Lettering, Meg is bright, funny, mostly grounded, and above all, highly creative. Meg is a hand-lettering artist who is making a living in New York by creating custom planners and wall art for paying clients. You can add a successful business owner to her list of good qualities.

Download this book with the LIBBY app for more information go to Augusta Richmond County Libraries homepage at arcpls.org

Not that she isn’t having problems. One huge problem is the creative block on a project which might land her a contract with a huge arts and crafts chain to create a custom line of planners and accessories. Another problem is the coldness that’s developed between her and her best friend Sibby. And, there is the way that Meg avoids confrontation in both her work and her personal life.

But another problem is a former client, who wants to know why Meg penned the encoded message MISTAKE into his wedding program. Meg’s embarrassed that Reid decoded the hidden message and worries that Reid’s breakup with his fiancé is a casualty of the secret. She is also worried how this could affect her career and the reputation of the shop she freelances from.

You would think Reid would be the last person Meg would want to have any relationship with. Especially, because he hates New York while Meg has come to love it. To try and change his mind and unblock her creative side, she plans a series of walks to look at old signs for inspiration and show Reid another side of New York. Amazingly, Reid agrees to go along on the walks.

As her relationship with her best friend grows more isolating, Meg reaches out to form stronger friendships with her co-workers as well as a brand-new friendship with a movie star client who happens to be the star of Meg’s favorite movie.

All the while she continues to see Reid, their reluctant attraction developing into a liking and then a full-blown affection for one another.

At least until a huge secret that Reid has been keeping from Meg is revealed, and the blowback threatens to swamp not only her business but her carefully crafted relationship with Reid. Can confrontation-shy Meg rise to the occasion, mend her past mistakes, and keep the new friendships she has developed? The only way to find out is to read Love Lettering by Kate Clayborn.

Sophie Kinsella’s My Not So Perfect Life shows us just that, the not so perfect life of Katie Brenner. But Katie’s working hard to become her new perfect self, Cat Brenner. Cat Brenner is just one or two or ten steps away from perfection, but she knows she has to pay her dues. So Katie Brenner is busy making the best of her long commute, her routine job in a big successful branding company, and her cupboard sized room with her less than congenial roommates.

Find this book on the Libby app at arcpls.org

Call your nearest library branch for more information

Besides, Cat is living the life on her Instagram page full of brilliant photos and witty captions while Katie is busy dealing with reality. Katie is under a lot of pressure to make it all come true, and the most pressure she feels comes from her Dad. He’s loving, supportive, and positive that evil old London is no place for his baby girl.

Trying to get her boss’s attention is Cat/Katie’s big workplace goal. How can she get her work noticed and start moving up the ladder of Cooper Clemmow? Surely its by getting her boss, the brilliant and perfect Demeter Farlowe, to take a look at Katie’s ideas for branding campaigns, not helping her boss dye her roots during a lunch break?

That question is moot once Cat/Katie is the victim of budget cuts and laid off from her job. She doesn’t even get laid off gently since Demeter has forgotten to fire her and does it on the run in an elevator ride. What’s going to happen to Katie’s dreams now?

Katie goes back to Somerset, her home county, and ties herself into knots trying to job hunt on the sly while helping her Dad and Stepmother set up a new business on the family farm. As we root for Katie to get her life back on track, she starts to gain wisdom about that gap between perfect life and real life.

This book gets its points across in some witty, if cringe inducing, humor as we watch Katie fumble from one scene of her life to the next. It’s a great coming of age story that, by the end, leaves a big smile on your face. So check this out through Augusta-Richmond County Libraries’ new Libby app. As a chronically ill computer geek she sets out on her journey of independence and enjoys things like going camping, traveling, and doing something bad …and who better to help her than her handyman Redford Morgan. Red as he’s called is the handyman by day, artist by night and the first bad thing Chloe does is to spy on this sexy heartthrob during his nightly shirtless painting. She enlists him to help her check a few things off her list and the adventure between these two ensue. Will Chloe get a life and maybe Red along with it? Well, you’ll have to read Talia Hibbert’s Get a Life, Chloe Brown to find out!

Sophie Kinsella has a real hit in I’ve Got Your Number. It starts off fast and goes faster as we hop on the roller-coaster life of Poppy Wyatt, a physiotherapist, who has just lost her family heirloom engagement ring. In the middle of a meltdown, Poppy is mugged and her cell phone is stolen.

Desperate for a phone, Poppy can’t believe her luck when she finds an abandoned cell phone in a litter bin. The phone had been the property of a ditzy personal assistant for an uber-busy corporate executive. But Poppy needs a phone number to recover her ring, so she keeps it rather than turning it into a lost and found.

Almost instantly, Poppy is hooked up to the life of wildly busy Sam. Having negotiated that Poppy may borrow the phone if she forwards all of Sam’s emails to him. she is sucked quickly into the role of a temporary personal assistant learning more and more about Sam while as the wedding day advances, she feels she knows less and less about Magnus.

On the days leading up to her wedding, rather than thinking bridal thoughts, Poppy gets sucked into solving a plot to oust Sam’s boss as head of the company. As they spend more time together, Poppy realizes she is starting to have feelings for Sam. But Poppy is determined to nip those in the bud and keep her promise to Magnus. The reader is on the edge of their seat, wondering if Poppy walks down the aisle or not.

Enjoy the perils of Poppy today on Augusta-Richmond County Library’s new app, LIBBY for borrowing e-books and audio books.
Whether dealing with naked customers or locating AWOL helicopters, she’s a problem fixer extraordinaire. But trying to figure out who murdered Lyda Sue Stalnaker while managing damage control for the casino might be more than she can handle.

While Lucky can handle a blackmail ring and a plan for a corporate buyout of the Babylon by framing the owner, the Big Boss, for murder, she’s not so good at handling her personal life. Actually, she needs a personal life first. So, while we watch Lucky solve the crimes, we read to see if Lucky will get lucky in love at last.

Take a gamble on Wanna Get Lucky in print or audio book from your local Augusta-Richmond County library today.
